Simple Pleasures

Microwave popcorn cooker: $1.99
2-lb bag of organic popcorn kernels: $1.99
Eating fresh-popped popcorn on the couch at 4 PM in the afternoon: priceless

I love popcorn, and I eat a lot of it. A 3-bag box of organic air-popped popcorn (6 servings) costs $3.79, meaning that this popcorn popper may be my best thrift-store find yet. I'm really looking forward to experimenting with flavorings. Next up: bacon salt.

What is bacon salt?
It doesn't sound like something you would eat.

I use a paper bag for a microwave corn popper. You can just fold it over, or you can staple the bag shut (staples are not affected by microwave-length radiation).
I find that when I air-pop, I have to add some sort of oil, after the popping process, so that the salt will stick to the kernels.

Otherwise, the popcorn is kind of bland. I'm not sure if bacon salt is greasy enough to stick on its own. I usually use a couple teaspoons of extra-virgin olive oil.

Bacon salt is amazing! It's vegetarian but somehow tastes like bacon. I put it on everything: rice cakes, carrot sticks, and now popcorn. I use a couple squirts of cooking spray to get the seasoning to stick, but since I really like bland starchy foods, even if it doesn't work I don't mind. It's nice to know that staples aren't affected by microwave radiation; I'm always afraid to microwave tea bags because of the little staples.
